Umar Zakaria is the 2018 Jazz Tui Award winner for his debut album, ‘Fearless Music’. After graduating from the New Zealand School of Music, he continued his studies at the New England Conservatory in Boston, and went on to perform original music in Japan, Singapore, Germany, the Netherlands and the United States as well as New Zealand. Umar’s music combines jazz improvisation and the Malay music of Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. He is currently in Wellington working on his next album.
