Ngarino Ellis (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou) is an Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Auckland, and has been researching and teaching about Māori art and architecture for the past 20 years. Her first book was A Whakapapa of Tradition: One Hundred Years of Ngāti Porou Carving 1830-1930 (2016) and she is currently completing, a book entitled Toi Te Mana: A History of Indigenous Art from Aotearoa New Zealand (forthcoming 2021) with Professor Deidre Brown (Ngati Kahu).
