Weekend Viewing: Nobuhiko Obayashi’s Hausu (1977)

Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 horror-fantasy-comedy Hausu has to be seen in full to be believed. It tells the story of a teenage schoolgirl who, horrified at her widowed father taking a glamorous new partner, steals away to her mother’s sister’s ancestral home for the holidays with a bunch of her friends. Gradually, they figure out that the aunt has been dead for years, that something malevolent pervades the very spirit of the house - and then all hell breaks loose. Reviewers who have tapped this as ‘Monty Python meets Dario Argento’ are getting close to the mark, but this really is its own mindblowing beast. Simultaneously beautiful, stupid, ridiculous, terrifying and exploitative. I’m still reeling. I know I say this every post, but the Incredibly Strange people have to bring this one across at some point.
