To mark the end of our 2016 season, we're bringing back our sell-out storytelling series with a late-night edition featuring Hera Lindsay Bird, Thomas Sainsbury, Lucy Zee, Alice Snedden and a giant pass the parcel. Hosted by Jess Holly Bates, there'll be tales of breaking the rules, making the rules, and reinventing the game entirely - and it'll all be on the set of Silo Theatre's wild and unruly Perplex. It's going to be a very special night, and we'd love to see you there!

Meet our storytellers

Hera Lindsay Bird is a poet from Wellington, who just released her self titled book Hera Lindsay Bird. As a child, her favourite game was "lost orphan, trapped in the witches' torture chamber" and as an adult her favourite game is "lost orphan, trapped in the witches' torture chamber" aka poetry. But she also likes Tetris.

Lucy Zee is a television creative producer from Auckland and a freelance writer. Her favourite game to play is Settlers Of Catan so that she can ask people "Have you got wood?"

Thomas Sainsbury has written, directed, produced and acted in more than 50 theatre productions. His plays have been performed in Australia, USA, UK, France, Greece and New Zealand and his thriller novel (which he co-wrote with Swedish author Linda Olsson) was published in Europe and Australasia.

Tom's favourite game is flirting.

Alice Snedden is a comedian from Auckland. She trained and performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York, where she completed their long-form improv and sketch programs. Alice is a writer on TV3’s Funny Girls and a member of the hit weekly show SNORT at the Basement Theatre. Her favourite game to play is the game of life, because oh boy, you never know where it’ll take you.

Pair Rules of the Game with Silo Theatre's Perplex

Couple A arrive home from holiday to find their house out of sorts. Couple B had been housesitting and haven’t paid the electricity bill. Couple B arrive home to find that Couple A have let themselves in and have moved their things around. It’s all a bit perplexing.

Kicking off just like any other domestic comedy, Perplex quickly devolves into a nonsensical game of blurred lines and morphed characters. From the appearance of an elk, Nietzsche and a Nazi, to nude discussions of Darwin — this is one hell of a mind bender.

German playwright Marius von Mayenburg throws theatrical conventions at the fourth wall till it breaks. Actors swap characters like hats and there are absolutely no rules in this wild, absurdist deconstruction of personal identity and theatre itself.

Riffing on the realities we create and the constant reinvention of ourselves, Perplex is a deeply funny and incredibly bizarre farce about nothing and everything at the same time.
