Could you be our new Mema Poari?

We're looking for two enthusiastic new board members to bring fresh perspectives and expertise to our governance body.

The Pantograph Punch is looking for two enthusiastic new board members to bring fresh perspectives and expertise to our governance body, with one of the positions ideally transitioning into the chairperson role.

As a member of the board, you’ll be part of a small team shaping the future of The Pantograph Punch, ensuring our people are looked after, and overseeing the financial management of the organisation to ensure it’s sustainable and responsible.

A board is better with a diverse range of knowledge and expertise, so we’re looking for people with experience in any of the following areas:

  • The arts
  • Fundraising and business development
  • Digital strategy
  • Publishing, journalism, broadcasting and/or cultural criticism
  • Events, public programming and/or production
  • Advocacy and partnerships
  • Charities and philanthropy

We strongly encourage applications from tangata whenua.

While governance experience is desirable, we welcome applications from people interested in developing their skills in this area.

Who we are

The Pantograph Punch is an online journal that publishes punchy arts and cultural commentary, from personal essays to criticism and reviews to interviews and analysis.

We are also proudly independent, non-profit, and a registered charity, with a focus on the development of emerging writers and championing of the arts in Aotearoa.

Our kaupapa

We believe in the value of the arts, in developing and showcasing talented writers, and in enriching the quality of the critical conversations our communities are having (or not having, as the case may be).

What we’re looking for

With some recent personnel changes, the organisation is in an exciting period of reorientation and development, with a shift in editorial model and a number of projects underway to strengthen and diversify our revenue.

We are looking to bolster our governance board to bring in new expertise and ensure strong Māori leadership.

We currently have four board members, and the two successful applicants will increase this number to six.

We're looking to appoint people for a two-year term, with the opportunity to reappoint for up to three terms in total.

There is an expected time commitment of four to six board meetings per year, in addition to regular conversation between meetings. We anticipate a higher workload in the first 6 months for new board members, as we forge relationships with each other and with The Pantograph Punch team, and work together to craft our board culture and kaupapa.

Please note that these positions are voluntary.

Current board members are based throughout New Zealand, and we endeavour to balance face to face and online communication, so it is likely some travel for meetings will be necessary for these roles.

The Pantograph Punch is committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and celebrating Aotearoa's increasing diversity. We are seeking board members who share our commitment to these principles, and who will help us shape an inclusive organisation and cultural conversation.

How to apply

Please send a covering letter outlining why you’d make a valuable addition to The Pantograph Punch board, along with a CV demonstrating the skills and experience you will contribute to the organisation, to board chair Hayden Eastmond-Mein [email protected] by 5pm on Friday 30 July 2021.
