Artists for Ceasefire are a group of creatives across the motu, petitioning the New Zealand government to call for an immediate ceasefire in occupied Palestine. Here is their open letter, which you can sign.
Artists of Aotearoa in Solidarity with Palestine: A Call For a Ceasefire
Prime Minister elect - Christopher Luxon
Rt. Hon. Chris Hipkins
Hon. Carmel Sepuloni
Hon. Nanaia Mahuta
We the undersigned include various Māori, Indigenous, Arab, Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, non-religious, Queer, people of colour and tāngata Tiriti who are artists, writers and cultural workers. We are writing to urge you, our elected leaders, to call for an immediate ceasefire and condemn the Israeli Government for their blatant disregard for international human rights.
Since October 7th we have been seeing an unprecedented attack on the civilian population of Gaza by Israel, backed by the EU, UK and United States. On October 8th, Israel placed Gaza – the occupied territory it has long illegally blockaded – under complete siege, cutting off all food, water and fuel to the territory. Gaza consists of 2.2 million people, half of whom are children. This is a clear disregard of International Humanitarian Law and constitutes collective punishment under the Geneva Conventions. The situation is becoming exponentially worse as bombardment and the loss of civilian lives continues and the delivery of aid, food and fuel is blocked or severely restricted.
Ceasefires have been called by a range of humanitarian organisations across the globe. As we write this a ceasefire has been called by Amnesty International, the UN, Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF, Human Rights Watch, Save the Children and OXFAM. We are watching a human rights and humanitarian catastrophe, and we as global citizens can no longer remain quiet. We have come together as artists, writers, musicians and cultural workers to make the demand for an immediate ceasefire at the very least, and call on our government to do its part in calling for an end to this bombardment.
In writing this letter in support of the Palestinian people of Gaza we call on our leaders to demand:
1. An immediate ceasefire to prevent the deaths of more Palestinians and to allow for dignified burials of the deceased. The morgues in Gaza are so overflowing that mass graves have been dug and the risk of disease outbreak is high.
2. The expulsion of the Israeli Ambassador and the United States Ambassador from our country should they not implement an immediate ceasefire.
3. The lifting of the siege to restore water, food and fuel, medical supplies and humanitarian aid, and the protection of medical facilities.
4. The facilitation of safe passage for the critically ill and those who wish to find safety, and permitting the entry of medical and rescue teams. We want to make clear we stand against the forced displacement of Palestinian civilians to areas outside of Palestine.
5. Ending any and all foreign military aid to Israel.
6. The recognition of the State of Palestine and ending Israel’s illegal occupation and apartheid regime. We support the right of return to Palestinian people who have been dispossessed of their lands since 1948.
We are hugely concerned also for Palestinians living in Occupied Palestinian territories, especially the West Bank and East Jerusalem, but also within Israel itself. In these areas, over 120 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) and armed illegal settlers. Within the Occupied West Bank (OWB) a number of settlements have been attacked and bombed by aircraft, including the Jenin refugee camp. Almost 1500 Palestinians in the OWB have been detained. Many of these Palestinians are employed within Israel and the OWB. We call on the western community and the New Zealand government to explicitly call these actions out and for elected officials to condemn Israel for these acts of brutality. We ask the New Zealand government to call for the release of all hostages and prisoners.
The attacks on the 7th of October, resulting in many Israeli deaths, was a tragedy. But it didn’t happen in a vacuum. This attack happened against the backdrop of a 75-year long illegal occupation of Palestinian land and denial of Palestinian self-determination. The current collective punishment of the people of Gaza is completely unjustified and is a continuation and escalation of decades of persecution and purging by the Zionist regime of Israel. We believe that all life is sacred, but in the words of the late Palestinian academic Edward Said, “In sheer numerical terms, in brute numbers of bodies and property destroyed, there is absolutely nothing to compare between what Zionism has done to Palestinians and what, in retaliation Palestinians have done to Zionists”.
We ask for the New Zealand media and the New Zealand public to condemn what we are seeing, which is a genocide. We ask them to call for an ending of this siege, and for the dismantling of the apartheid conditions that have been enforced upon Palestinian people over decades. In 2022, Amnesty International found that Israel imposes a system of oppression and domination against Palestinians across all areas under its control: in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and against Palestinian refugees. This amounts to apartheid as prohibited in international law. These punitive laws, policies and practices are intended to maintain this system of persecution and control over Palestinians. These actions have left them fragmented geographically and politically, frequently impoverished, and in a constant state of fear and insecurity.
We reject and utterly condemn the rise in anti-Palestinian, anti-Islamic, and anti-Arab violence everywhere. We also condemn the rise in punishment of those who support Palestinian liberation, including artists, writers, academics and everyone who has lost work and opportunities for supporting Palestine.
We reject and utterly condemn the rise in anti-Semitic violence. We also acknowledge that standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people is not anti-Semitism. Zionism is not Judaism. Zionism is a form of racism and is a colonial ideology that does not represent the views and practices of all Jewish people throughout the world.
All people whether they are Muslim, Christian, Jewish or non-religious deserve to live with dignity and freedom, especially the 3,257 children who at this time of writing have been reported as killed, which include 3,195 in Gaza, 33 in the West Bank and 29 in Israel. It is estimated that 8,000 people have been killed in Gaza, as well 1,400 people in Israel. These are not just numbers, but people who had dreams, funny quirks, favourite foods and who loved and were loved by their families.
These aren’t just numbers.
Everyone - all peoples in the holy land - deserves to live safely, without the fear of death and destruction.
From the river to the sea.
Palestine will be free.
Free from borders.
Free from tyranny.
Signed by Muslim, Arab, Māori, Jewish, Indigenous, Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, non-religious, Queer, People of Colour and Tāngata Tiriti artists, writers, researchers and cultural workers from across the motu.
This petition, signed by over 1000 artists including Jane Campion, Chelsea Winstanley, Tayi Tibble, Nigel Borell, Rachel House, and Chris Tse is calling for an immediate ceasefire and political solidarity with occupied Palestine. It was sent to the New Zealand Government on Thu 2 Nov, 2023.
