Can you courageously lead Pantograph Punch into the future? We're on the lookout for our next Kaitohu.

The Pantograph Punch is an online journal and digital hub publishing bi-monthly issues that seek to excite, inspire, and challenge our readers and our sector. As a whānau we believe in the value of the arts, in developing and showcasing talented writers, and in enriching the quality of the critical conversations we’re having as a nation. To help lead the organisation, we are looking for someone to join Pantograph Punch in the role of Kaitohu Director.

Our next Kaitohu will be a courageous leader, nurturing the space Pantograph Punch provides for the next generation of writers. We are looking for someone who will bring innovative thinking and bold ideas for the financial growth of this digital-first organisation, and embody the kaupapa which underpin the organisation. You will need to have relevant experience and skills for leading business development activities, the ability to inspire the team which is spread nationwide, and an innovative strategic vision for the future of Pantograph Punch. Mentoring and development opportunities will be made available to support the successful candidate into the role, and the board commits to a supportive and collaborative working relationship.

Rate: $80,000 pro rata

The Pantograph Punch is an online journal and digital hub, publishing bi-monthly issues that seek to excite, inspire, and challenge our readers and our sector.

Our Kaupapa

We believe in the value of the arts, developing and showcasing talented writers, and enriching the quality of the critical conversations we’re having as a nation.

Launched in 2011, we publish smart and urgent writing that sets the agenda on issues related to arts and culture in Aotearoa, by a range of writers that reflect our national diversity. We do this with a sense of care. Our editorial strategic priorities include strengthening our commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi, continuing to platform a diversity of perspectives, and increasing the relevance of our coverage to those outside of the main cities.

The Pantograph Punch team currently includes Editor Ataria Sharman, Communications Manager Sherry Zhang, and Staff Writers Ana McAllister, Sinead Overbye and Faith Wilson.

Role Description

The Director will be working in collaboration with the Editor to:

  • Lead the strategic development of the Pantograph Punch
  • Lead business development and revenue generating activities
  • Ensure our artistic objectives are met

The key tasks involved in this role include:

Business development

  • Manage relationships, applications and agreements with funding bodies like Creative New Zealand and Auckland Council
  • Leading business development activities, which include pitching for partnerships, events, funding proposals, corporate sponsorships, patronage and our membership scheme, with an annual target of $80k (separate to public funding)
  • Work with contractors to deliver revenue generation activities and special projects, with a target of developing 2 new revenue streams, with an annual target of $50k
  • Managing key stakeholder relationships in collaboration with relevant team members

Operational management

  • Developing and monitoring the operational budget for The Pantograph Punch
  • Reporting to the board on operational, business and audience performance
  • Leading special ad-hoc projects in consultation with the Editor (for example, a site rebuild or the creation, hiring and on-boarding of a new position)

Audience development

  • Developing, executing and evaluating the organisation’s audience development strategy in consultation with both the board and the Editor
  • Managing the organisation’s evaluation processes (which include writer feedback, workshop feedback and reader surveys)

People management

  • Quarterly formal reviews with the Editor and Communications Manager (who report directly to this role)
  • Managing contract staff
  • Attending fortnightly meetings with the editorial team and providing them with brief fortnightly updates

The Candidate

Our preferred candidate will be a driven, creative thinker and problem-solver with:

  • Entrepreneurial flair with demonstrable experience in in business development
  • Stakeholder management experience
  • Demonstrable broad knowledge of the arts sector in Aotearoa
  • Strong oral and communication skills
  • A shared commitment to the values that underpin our kaupapa

Experience in research and audience strategy and existing leadership experience will be an advantage.

Mentoring and development opportunities will be made available to support the successful candidate into the role, and the board commits to a supportive and collaborative working relationship.

Candidates should be able to clearly articulate how they uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in their workplace and professional activities.
